Did you know that 8 out of 10 individuals with dyslexia struggle with directional knowledge? This often manifests as B/D reversals in children, a challenge I personally faced. As an adult, I've found that my struggles have shifted from B/D reversals to left/right confusion - much to my husband's amusement! I vividly recall the grade 6 epiphany when I discovered using the word "bed" to distinguish between B and D. I also remember learning the "L shape" trick, where making an L with my fingers helped me identify my left hand. However, I also remember the frustration of being repeatedly asked, "Which hand do you write with? That's your right hand." Unfortunately, this approach never stuck. This experience has taught me the importance of patience when supporting children with dyslexia. It's essential to offer various tips and tricks, but also to recognize that each individual may need time to find the right approach. Avoid frustration and instead, celebrate the moment when they finally discover a method that works for them. With patience and persistence, they'll develop a lasting solution, and the struggle will become a distant memory.
